How to Send a Text from an Email

For many people, text messaging is their preferred method of communication. However, not many people know they can send a text message to a cell phone number from a computer through their email accounts.

If you need to send a text message to a recipient but you are unable to use your cell phone, you can use your computer to send the text from your email account. Most cell phone carriers, such as AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, offer free Short Messaging Service (SMS) and Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) gateways that make it possible to send email and text messages. The email you send will show up on the receiver’s phone as a text message. As the sender, you will be able to reply to the emailed text message, which will appear in your email inbox.

Send A Text Message from an Email

Are you tired of constantly using the tiny keyboard on your phone to send text messages? Did you misplace your phone or is the battery dead? Are you being productive at your computer and don’t want to take a break to send and respond to texts? We understand! It happens, and we’re here to help. Learn how to send a text from an email directly from your computer!

Sending a text from an email is very helpful when you only have data and no cellular service. This can happen regularly in cell phone dead zones or on planes.
Here’s how to send a text from an emai:

  • Open your email app on your computer.
  • In the “To” field, enter the 10-digit phone number you want to text, and add the corresponding email domain at the end of it.  (Do not include dashes)
  • Compose your message.
  • Once you click send, the recipient will receive a text message.
  • You will receive replies to the text in your email inbox.

We’ve compiled a list of the SMS Gateway Domains for some of the more common carriers:

  • AT&T: number@txt.att.net (SMS), number@mms.att.net (MMS)
  • Sprint: number@messaging.sprintpcs.com (SMS), number@pm.sprint.com (MMS)
  • T-Mobile:  number@tmomail.net   (SMS & MMS)
  • Verizon: number@vtext.com (SMS), number@vzwpix.com (MMS)

To take this up a notch from a productivity standpoint, we’d recommend creating contacts within your email account so that you don’t have to always look up the cell phone numbers that you don’t have memorized.

One of the advantages of sending texts from an email address is the fact that it’s free. However, you could incur charges if you send too many texts within a short timeframe. The mobile carrier may block or limit your domain from sending additional messages and you may have to pay a fee on a per-message basis.

If you want to text an appointment reminder or send a quick message to your clients without having to use your cell phone, you can use your email account to send your clients a text message. Many clients read and respond faster to their text messages than to their emails. Sending a text from an email is an easy, free, and fast way to do this. There is no need to pay for a third-party service that you’re not familiar with, and there is no need to install an application that you don’t trust.

If you are ever in a bind and need a way to communicate for free via text, you can send a text message to any major mobile service provider by using your email address. This can be very helpful if you are planning to send a few texts. With this method, you will have no problem getting your message across within a reasonable amount of time. Try it out by sending a text from your email to your cell phone.
