2013 Hurricane Season

According to U.S. Government forecasters, the Atlantic hurricane season is expected to be much busier than usual. They’ve predicted that we’ll have as many as six major storms during the season.

On May 23rd, The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said there’s a 70 percent chance that between 13-20 storms will form in the Atlantic Ocean this season.

They believe that 11 of these storms could strengthen and intensify, turning them into hurricanes with winds of 119 KM/hour or higher. Whether or not these storms make landfall over the U.S. is anyone’s guess.  Mother Nature can be unpredictably fierce.

NOAA explained that the reason hurricane season may be more threatening than normal is because average waters in the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic are warmer this year.  This along with other atmospheric conditions create a prime environment for hurricanes to form and strengthen.

In 2012, there were ten Atlantic hurricanes, including Hurricane Sandy, which devastated the New Jersey and New York coasts in October. The hurricane season officially begins on June 1st, and lasts until November 30th.

NOAA has released this announcement to ensure Americans are fully prepared for potentially devastating and life-threatening storms. The “life” of businesses is threatened as well. It’s time to ensure all backup systems are running optimally, electronic information is stored offsite in a storm-sheltered data warehouse and that all disaster recovery systems are in place.
