Quick Tech Tip: Best Way to Close Your Laptop Lid

Are you tired of waiting for your laptop to re-start after a break? This quick tech tip will help reduce time and boost productivity for your staff.

Laptops are synonymous with business today, but there are definitely some challenges with this type of computer. Businesses are more willing to provide options for remote work, and employees are taking advantage of this opportunity in droves. A recent Gallup report shows that 43% of Americans work from home or other remote locations on a regular basis. One of the issues that staff mention is the time required to get their laptop back up to speed after closing the lid. Fortunately, there’s a quick fix that will help you be productive faster than ever.

What Happens When You Close Your Laptop Lid?

If you’re tired of losing information when you close the lid of your laptop, this tip’s for you! There are several settings that you can tweak that will allow you or your IT administrator to fine-tune the way you want to work. You can even define different actions based on whether your laptop is attached to power or running on a battery backup — great for those times when you really need to save your battery life!

Here are the key states for your laptop:

  • Sleep: Want to hit “pause” on that project and be ready to immediately pick it back up when your laptop is opened again? The Sleep state offers the best of both worlds: lower power requirements paired with a quick-save of any open work. Even better, your laptop senses when battery power is extremely low and will completely shut down.
  • Hibernate: As you can imagine, Hibernate is the state between Sleep and Shut Down. It’s intended for long periods of inactivity and has a lower battery drain than the Sleep function.
  • Shut Down: When you choose Shut Down as your option for when your laptop is closed, your system will automatically save all open work, close your applications and completely shut off.

You’ll find all of these options in your “Define power buttons and turn on password protection” section of your computer.
